My experience is that that particular attitude is by no means confined to Apple. In fact Apple's actually much better about 3rd party software and hardware than say HP or Dell (with the sole exception of RAM, but Apple and its customers have been burned repeatedly by out of spec SPD programming on DIMMs). No computer company is nearly as bad about this as Camera companies are (hmm, non-standard focus screen equals warranty denial for a blown AF motor or similar)
