I always get the image when I go to the color temp and start adjusting. You have to get to the screen with the dot (cursor) moving around the color space graph.
If not, try a Hail Mary. Or hire a Catholic to say one for you. If you take a shot and notice, for example, that your white balance is off, the natural thing to do is to hit the Fn button, go over to White Balance, and pick which one you'd like to set it to. MANY times, when I pop into that menu option, it will show me the previously-shot photo. Then I can pick 'n' choose a balance which shows me the previously-shot image more-or-less accurately. I find that really handy to get it close with a minimum of fuss. However, it doesn't do that all of the time. What I haven't figured out is what logic is used to determine "yeah, I'll show him a preview" or "no, I'm just gonna give him a blank screen and let him work it out".
