I'm not sure what you mean, Ralf.

I have only the past two years of photos on my in-box hard drive. The  
rest of my work is on external drives, CDs and DVDs. My Lightroom  
library has them all in the catalog and I can browse them any time I  
want, whether I have the volumes mounted or not. It marks folders that  
are offline in red in the Folder panel.

Images that are off line are presented with a question mark in the  
Grid view. Click on the question mark and it puts up a location  
selector which includes the volume/path of the previous known location.

If I go to the Develop module without mounting the volume, it tells me  
when the original is offline or missing. If I mount the volume, it  
opens the original to work on.

What is missing?
