John Wittingham's PESO of Robert the Bruce reminded me of this shot I took last month in Ireland, of the Royal Seat atop the Hill of Tara:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7248656&size=lg Uneasy the head that wears the crown, but uneasier still the butt that sits on this "seat." Are there any Irish on this list? If there are, I would like an explanation for the sad shape of the Hill of Tara, which ought to be one of Ireland's most cherished sites. It is certainly of great historic importance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_of_Tara We were there in April, but the small visitor's center only open from mid-May to mid-September. The gift shop at the road had a copy of the video from the visitor's center, but it was hard to see on the tiny screen and impossible to hear in the din of the shop. There are very few signs pointing the way to Tara, and they are small and confusing. We went right past it, but we saw the coffee shop and gift shop, and asked for directions, only to find it was right behind the shops. There are very few explanatory sign on the hill, on the hill itself is covered with cow and sheep dung, making it difficult and unpleasant to navigate site Ireland does a good job with a few of its historically important sights, like the book of Kells, Newgrange, the Rock of Cashelm the Kilmainham Gaol and the emigration port at Cobh, but most of the big tourist attracts seem to revolve around Norman castles and English estates, rather than the history and culture of the Irish people. I think that the neglected condition of the Hill of Tara is an Irish national disgrace. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
