Extra exposure seemed to be the trick. I was shooting with an old Tokina AT-X 80-200/2.8, so I did the green button thingie and then opened up a stop.

I don't know how high those things fly, but its a few miles away from me. Maybe tomorrow I'll see if I can get a shot with the 600mm. It could be worse, I could have a swimming pool fixation....
