I'm not so sure.  One of the biggest sources of problems for 
many naive point-and-shoot users is focussing on the wrong
part of the scene.  Face recognition hels with that, as the
AF circuitry can be piased to preferentially focus on faces.
 
Nikon have taken this one step further in their latest P&S
bodies - the face recognition circuitry knows about eyes,
too, and will delay taking the shot if the subject blinks.
