I have had to change my web site's host service. The bad news is that the new host service charges for bandwidth as well as for disk space (I've never had to deal with that before), and the bandwidth used by both my freeware programs and the Pentax FAQ would (if nothing were done) cause me to pay considerably more per month for the host service. Unfortunately, unlike my shareware programs, neither of these uses help to pay for the host service costs, so "they've gotta go" (elsewhere).
A little history on the Pentax FAQ: Basically, the FAQ had been languishing for years, and in fact became unavailable for a time a year or two ago, and it looked like it might even be lost (!!!). Someone (sorry - I don't remember who) did have a copy of it on his hard drive and was able to send it to me, and I simply put it on my own web site, almost as is. I did make a few small changes, but basically put it up on my site about the way it was (which was about the way it had remained since the mid-90's, I think). I really didn't have the desire or the time to do much with it - I just put it on my site to save it from loss and to make it still available to all (even though it was still in need of much updating). So, I will need someone to take over the Pentax FAQ hosting by adopting the little orphan and giving the poor waif a loving home (or at least a home of some sort). The lucky sponsor would have to have adequate server space for it and adequate bandwidth, too (I was surprised how many hits the ol' site still got). There is no major hurry to make this transition, as I have plenty of room to keep it inactively on the server. But, since I had to disable it to keep from getting an extra bill for bandwidth overage, the FAQ will now be inaccessible until it finds a new home. I would prefer that it have some sort of a long-term home, of course, especially in the possession of someone intent on updating and improving the FAQ. The FAQ right now includes 103 files in 11 directories, and involves about 1 MB of info. (However, depending on the cluster size on the hard drive, it may need much more physical space for storage - e.g., on the Windows FAT32 hard drive that I have here, the actual storage space is over 3 MB.) Zipped up, it can be dispatched to its new home as a 350 KB file. Anybody interested? Fred - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
