They had a reputation for being fast, (for their focal length) and very sharp in the center of their image circle, and much less so at the edges and in the corners. A friend in College, (University to non Americans), had a Novoflex 600mm he used in a Nikon F to photograph "critters". The slides and negatives he produced bore that out. I was a bit envious of that lens. Using it on an APS-C digital just simply plays to it's strength.
