Cost

Here CS3 runs at about AU$800, CS3 Extended about AU$1200. GIMP & 
other open source SW runs at about AU$0.

As an example I own PTGui for stitching my panoramas. I bought it 
before I knew about Hugin. Hugin, is open source, does everything 
that PTGui does, and is free.
