Oops I mixed up viewing and printing. 100% at 96dpi makes a rather large display on the monitor, but 100% at 300dpi isn't too huge at all.
Intermediate print sizes, say up to 24in x 36in, I always found troublesome because viewers so often stick their noses right up against them and criticize the graininess and softness. Bigger than that and it no longer was a problem because viewers had to back off for a proper appreciation of the "big picture", or couldn't get close anyway. It's been many years since I made a giant enlargement, and only ever type C or silver gelatin, never inkjet. I don't miss doing them.
