Regarding the closure of Union Square, I phoned a friend today. He tells me the stores and hotels around Union Square are open. It's the square itself (a square block between Powell, Post, Stockton, and O'Farrell) and the below-ground parking garage that are closed.
Of course, my friend is not a great shopper-:) It's the stores that would be decorated anyway.
