You see lots of cross-sectional diagrams in lens manuals, but it takes 
the real thing, bisected, to get how complex these things are.

The lens he mentions on the red background isn't actually a 30's lens. 
It's the amazing Tri-Elmar 28-35-50 from the late 90's.
