Old buildings benefit from candle light very often. There is a book by Junichiro Tanizaki called In Praise of Shadows which discusses this in a Japanese context, but I was in a Tudor building on Tuesday this week in which some of the rooms were lit naturally and the effect of the shadows on how the oil paintings look was very interesting. Seeing them brightly lit does not necessarily enhance them. Remember that these buildings and paintings were never expected to be seen any other way.
