Charles Bayliss was one of Australia's earliest photographers - all of his work was carried out in second half of the 19th century. I confess to never having heard of him until I saw a brief segment on television on Friday about an exhibition of his work now showing at the National Library of Australia in Canberra.
There is a small example of his work on the Library's website: http://www.nla.gov.au/exhibitions/bayliss/index.html It's worth a look even if you aren't able to visit Canberra while the exhibition is running (it's on until 12 October). His paroramas of Sydney (360 degree) and Stawell (180 degree) are inspiring, considering that they were photographed in the 1870s. The full catalogue of the exhibition can be downloaded from the website.
