On 27/7/08, MikeM, discombobulated, unleashed:

Interesting. Can you post the pic with the smudge?

I cleaned two cameras yesterday in readiness for vacation time next
week. Both had dirty sensors (non self-cleaning types) so I used sensor
swabs to clean them. The Epson R-D1 cleaned up first go but the 1DmII
took three separate goes. Inbetween each clean, I'd put a lens on, pop
outside, aim at clean sky, nab a frame at minimum aperture (f32 in this
case) and load it up for viewing on the Mac at 100%.

When dirty, no amount of peering in with the naked eye and a flashlight
will reveal the actual offending particles, simply too small to see. But
they were there!

After cleaning, I blow all the rear elements / mechanicals of all the
lenses (and their respective rear caps), surprising how much sticks to
those babies.

What might appear as a smudge, may be in fact a piece of lint or dust,
some of it 'sharp' and maybe some of it not (eg some not on the sensor).
