Sort of an inside Pennsylvania joke, I'm afraid. At the eastern end of Pennsylvania is Philadelphia, a large cosmopolitan city. At the west end is Pittsburgh, a large cosmopolitan city. In between (500 km or so) the state is very rural and very conservative.
So, some wag once said that Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with Alabama in the middle.
