NX isn't the fastest software out there, for sure. The issue is
related to how it renders edits, especially any "Base Adjustments' to
the RAW file's rendering. Rather than applying the edit to the
randered file, it re-renders the RAW with the new settings which is
much more accurate. It's much faster at applying additional edits
which are handled as layers over the RAW rendering.

On my Athlon 64 X2 with 3G of RAM NX is reasonably responsive, a bit
slower than PS.
