I have a few books about shooting photo essays, but I would like more. I'm not bothered about books OF photo essays, but books by photographers in which they show how they develop and execute their ideas, how the plan their essays and work up the structure of the final thing; where they talk about what they're doing.
Examples of the books I have, or have on order, which show what I'm talking about are: W Eugene Smith - various books William Albert Allard - The Photographic Essay Great Photographic Essays from Life Mary Ellen Mark - The Photo Essay Paul Fusco & Will McBride - The Photo Essay Sam Abell - Stay This Moment Hurn and Jay also have a good discussion on the subject in Being A Photographer, which I have. I can trace few, if any, others in which the photographer talks at length about essays, with candidate photos and the finished piece, rather than individual photos. A search of Amazon produces a list of 1000s, but most of them seem to be photo essays, and it would take the rest of my life to go through the list for what I want. If you can recommend any, please do.
