Might have to do some HDR-like things with night-time Christmas lights shots. At least, when I've tried to take them, I always ended up with decently exposed direct lighted spots on a black field, or some detail in the field, but the direct lighted spots burned through. :-) In your night shots, you're typically farther from the light source than I have been when I tried holiday lights, and the scenes were less evenly lit, so that could be part of it, too.
