I've got an old copy of MS Office 2004 spread around the house. If I'm
downstairs and someone is upstairs reading a .doc, I open my copy and it
says 'already in use' and quits. I take my computer off the wifi and
it's fine.

It's the only app that does that.

The others, inc original CS don't.

There's always 'Little Snitch' to tell you what's phoning home ;-)
