You're right. In addition, and a bit too weathered for me to make out, is  another word to 
the left of "&".
Whatever they did, is becoming a secret of the elements.

One possibility is the word to the left was "Appliance" ... a common combination in the 1950s.

When I was a kid in the 50s, the local Goodyear Tire franchise was "Appliance & TV Center". They sold washers & dryers, refrigerators & freezers, stereo hi-fi consoles AND TVs along with installing tires on your car.
