Frank,

I also like this image from a purely design point of view, but it can't
wholly engage me because of the intellectual disconnection between the
pedestrian and the doorway.  Your best work captures the connection between
the various elements in the frame.  So, this time: good composition but
emotional shortfall.

Have you tried the "Filtered B&W" under the Effects tab in Picasa?

My biggest nitpick with Picasa is the implementation of its levels
adjustments.  You can only brighten highlights and midtones not darken them,
or darken shadows not brighten them, because the slider null position is at
the left rather than in the centre.  And you can't do overall brightness
adjustment.  They would claim that a photographer designed this, but I'd
disagree.
