thanks to everyone who has commented on the pictures.

There are large parts of the Thames shoreline which are very deep
alluvial mud - it is a natural part of the river system this far
downstream whatever the state of cleanliness. I don't know whether or
not the beach is natural - perhaps the Mayor of London had the sand
stolen from Jamaica.

There is another quite large sand beach - about 150m long - almost
opposite me on the north bank. It is surrounded by council housing
(public housing) and used by local people a lot in summer for
sunbathing and so on. I've never taken pictures there but it's so
incongruous and little-known that I mean to get some shots there at
some time.
