To take some of the hit a miss out of the process, when I don't have enough time at a location to experiment with long exposures, is to use short (1.5-2 min) high ISO exposures to work out my base exposure, how much light painting I need & confirm correct focus. Then I work backwards to calculate the exposure time for the lowest ISO setting.
