I tend to use mostly single light sources in portraiture, usually
combining a single light with something to diffuse it so that it is a
broad light source.
Here I used a convenient low, sloping ceiling and an index card to
direct the light from the L1's built-in flash, in bounce position:

I find single-light source portraiture simple and effective, as long
as you get the lighting set up correctly.
