Thanks for the kudos, Jostein. It was an interesting exercise, but somewhat unsatisfying. I must've looked at hundreds of Bette Davis portraits, and since finding "The One" I've seen many hundreds more, this time in search of pictures that showed her hands very clearly. I have a suspicion that it isn't Bette's hand in this photo but a cut and paste replacement, because she had good sized hands with fairly thick fingers, as they are on the stamp, while the photo hand looks too small. Unfortunately, the trail runs cold at the version I found, which for all I know originated in 1996, when "Bette Davis Speaks" was published and not in 1951 when the photo was originally shot. The close tonal similarity of samples I found in different locations suggest to me that this is the common source for all the copies on the web.
So , feeling a little discouraged because the (non) smoking gun I found created even more questions (for me anyway), it's time to give it up and move on.
