I took the back off my lovely MX, to find out when it was assembled (Oct. 1980) and noticed a lot of black deposits on the light-seal ridges of the back, top and bottom.

Thinking that was deteriorated foam seal stuff, I got out the denatured (isopropyl) alcohol and a bunch of swabs.

Well, it dissolves whatever-it-is well, but it keeps coming off, like tar!

I'm not down to the base metal of the back, but thought I'd stop and ask what mild solvent is recommended. This stuff acted like acetone or MEK! I checked the label three times, to be sure!

The rest of the body is really perfect, but on the back there's some black stuff coming off, like I was dissolving paint!

What say ye?

Someone answered me, and I inadvertently tossed the message out, but essentially they said it probably WAS foam in that channel.
With MY poor ol' eyes, I didn't even know there WAS a channel!

So, I got out my flip-down magnifier glasses, and sure enough, I was dissolving whatever was in the foam, which kept coming off on the Q-tips!

I've let it 'dry' overnight and will clean up and reassemble tomorrow.
Actually, the foam strip seems to have survived my ministrations, in spite of inept intentions, and if it's still a little bouncy when daylight comes, I'll just reassemble the back on it!

Ya know, I need a set of magnifying lenses that fit on my regular glasses. I think jewelers have them...

Anyhow, mystery solved. Thanks for the help.
