A while back in Ontario, a pharmacist who was tired of his pharmacy being ripped off on a monthly basis (partially because he lived above it), decided one night to intervene: he shot the tires out from under the getaway van with his hunting rifle and held the thieves at bay until the police arrived. He was then charged with reckless use of a firearm. If I recall correctly, his entire defense was that he aimed for the tires of the van and hit the tires of the van.
