We see a fair number of those around Atlanta, but really only as part of
the automated red light enforcement. I don't believe they've started
more general video surveillance here. I understand that in (at least
parts of) Britain they're quite common.
We've got them around here, but that didn't look like a red light
enforcement camera.
It's a camera for real-time traffic congestion control. They put all
these cameras up on the streets that have heavy traffic, and some guy's
sitting at a console monitoring traffic flow at multiple intersections.
When traffic begins to back up on the main thoroughfare, he adjusts how
long the signal stays green to help ease traffic flow. The cross street
gets a little more wait time.
Of course, they record it all for later analysis, and that recording CAN
be used by Big Brother if he "needs" to.
