Our photogrammetry department used a 2 1/4 for there work, Rollie
IIRC, which had the 1cm grid pattern. Used it for mapping buildings
etc.

Now, Leica, and i'm, sure some of the other survey instrument firms
have a lazer that they use to scan buildings, and bridges(main use
right now). Amazing technology. After the software does its thing with
the scan, you can rotate, slice, calc volumes for concrete repair,
etc.
