I think what you have photographed there is a Burl, or Burr (GB). A gall is usually much smaller, and more organized.

Looks like the seed to a good halloween story...
I'll bet the wood of the gall will have some really interesting grain patterns, assuming
a wood worker gets to it before it before a fire.
