I googled up "number systems base 13".
There's not much available beyond an Adams quote that "Nobody writes
jokes in base 13 [...] I may be a pretty sad person, but I don't make
jokes in base 13."
I had an "Ah Ha" moment several months ago during an online discussion
of cricket. I don't remember if it was here or in
alt.binaries.photos.original on Usenet.
Someone posted a cricket photo and a discussion of it referred to the
Maori Haka dance, "silly leg" and some other pythonesque phrases.
Anyway, I was reading up on cricket on the internet, trying to
understand some of the comments, and I ran across a reference to
something in cricket that had a quantity of 42.
