I've never heard it called a laneway either. It's an alley, snicket or
ginnel. Lanes are in the country, not the town.

Must be one of them fancy-schmancy Melbourne terms then. A music
festival will be doing the rounds this summer in laneways in the capital
cities, including Sydney - argh, another Melbourne import.
