I think it has something to do with their cookies. At the first click you don't have a cookie, so the subscriber's gallery is the furthest you're authorized to go(presuming you've not visited since your cache was cleared). Once you get the cookie you're cleared to go straight to the image page. I don't see this behaviour, but I have Picasa on my system which probably changes the protocol, especially as I leave it signed in.
