Marnie, it is easy. Instead of making a web directory from small images, you can make it from originals. In the parameters of web gallery mode you can find a parameter that sets the size of imported images.
Unfortunately I have LR 2.1, thus I cannot show you the screen shot, but it is there and I hope you find this parameter. Once you solve this issue, I suggest you make a web gallery settings preset so that to save your time for the next gallery. HTH.
