That's called a Straw Man Argument, Peter. Attribute statements or positions to those you oppose, then argue against your statement, rather than what they've actually said (or done) to prove that you're right. Most people that I know in the peace movement do ~not~ think that way at all! They believe that to simply stop fighting will not stop wars. Peace isn't the lack of fighting or the lack of war, peace is a positive thing. Most "peaceniks" that I know believe that to stop war the underlying reasons for war must be eliminated. It's about equitable distribution of resources and economic stability. It's about doing something about economic disparities between nations, cultures and individuals, about giving real political power to individuals. Whether those peaceniks are right or not, I'm not about to say because I don't know, but I do not know of any that would simply say that the road to peace will be achieved by simply stopping war. cheers, frank -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
