the most amazing thing about dis-assembling flash units (IMHO) is the amazing amount of charge the capacitors can hold. I have always shorted these to remove the charge (by use of a resistor). But if you short accidentally with a screwdriver it can literally blow it in two, or at least take a chunk out of it, and no the flash doesn't need to be completely charged or even used that recently, for this to happen. Beware all, these things can do you serious damage. The same goes for the internal flash units in later cameras too.
