Well, I'm throught he first two chapters, and so far so good. In fact very good. I agree with the author's plan of attack, and the train of thought behind digital. He's stil very much pro-film and there's lots of thoughts on acquiring a scanner. But that doesn't mean to say he's not pro-digital camera. It's a well-balanced attitude.
The book is obviously aimed at the professional market insofar as the terminology will be easily recogniseable to the print industry. Photographers with a good understanding of the processes involved in turning film-based images into magazine article illustrations will have no problem keeping up. But for the photographer who wants to get a better understanding of Photoshop, there's plenty of assumption that you will already know many of the basics, even some intermediate stuff. If you don't know off the top of your head what all of the following mean, without looking it up, you might find this book frustrating: CMYK, prepress, D-max, ICC profile, blue channel, bit-depth and so on. There are explanations of some of these, but you may need a more basic book alongside to refresh your memory. However if these things come easily to mind, this could be the book for you. It is written from a photographer's point of view - not a Photoshop professional's. As such, many of the things that Photoshop can do that are not immediately relevant to inputting images and manipulating them ready for output, are not dealt with in depth. As the author says, there are other Photoshop volumes more suited to this end. This approach personally appeals, as I wanted something just taking me through image prep for printing, and more importantly the 'why' behind the actions. The explanations are well written, with the odd bit of humour (or should I say 'humor' as he has chosen US spelling, even tho a Brit!) and anecdote. As I say, I'm only a short way through it, but so far, I'm hooked. Haven't looked at the accompanying CD yet. More soon.
