Charles, there are some quick and dirty photo jobs those friends and I get now 
and then, in wich we just shoot like madmen, covering all angles we can of some 
meetings. Using JPGs our work is done as soon as we end shooting and dump the 
cards' contents. Using raw we just can't do that. Since we can't rely on good 
lights, shooting in raw allows much better images - at the cost of some time at 
the pc. Even then I'm using raw more and more.

If I borrow the Xti to try some serious photo, it's done in raw anyway - and 
I'll stay at the pc the time it takes to finish. Lucky me, that friend is very 
good with photoshop and lightroom.
