Same problem here with a Peak 8GB card. However, some brutal force and pliers solved the first problem. Then, peeling off the front label and a code label on the back solved the problem forever, restoring a proper card thickness. Then I marked P8 (for Peak 8GB) on the plastic card, just to rememember what card is that.
