Amazing serendipity. It just so happened that I was relating a story about the Bugatti Type 57SC Atalanta Coupé at dinner with some of my motocycle/car geeky friends on Tuesday night!

When I was 16, just after I got my drivers license in NY, and had just received a small inheritance from some uncle or aunt's passing away, I happened to see something interesting looking in a parking lot by the record store. it was one of these cars, I had no idea what it was then. I was so taken with it, I spend an hour or so just walking around it, sitting on the ground looking at it from all angles, etc. It was the most extraordinary car I'd ever seen. The owner ... a young, scruffy, obviously very wealthy guy with an attitude ... came back to the car and we talked for a while. He thought it was a piece of junk, "It's always needing service and no one knows how to work on it, a pain in the butt." He asked if I had any money, and I told him I had $1800 in the bank. "I'll sell it to you for that, I'm tired of the damn thing. Call me tomorrow."

He gave me his number. I got home out of breath at the prospect of buying it. My mother heard me talking about it to my brother, I saw her face go white. I never called.

It's a "that only happens in the movies" moment. A fabulous machine.
