Hi Bill,
        I've got the SMCT version of this (and the earlier 500/5). AFAIK
there isn't any difference between the SMCT 500/4.5 and K500/4.5 apart from
the mount, which is detachable anyway. Both lenses are manual diaphragm.
I guess you could hand hold it, but not for very long. A nice solid tripod
with the right head is needed - my Berlebach 2022 seems right but I only
have a ball head which is a real pain to use with this lens.
I don't have any experience with other long lenses to give you meaningful
feedback on how it performs, other than I haven't come across any problems
yet. I paid AUS$700 (US$350) for it and there was another for sale at the
same time for $AUS550 but I missed out on that one. $US700 does sound right
for a lens in the US - prices here do not compare at all to US prices, some
much lower, some much higher.
