actually, it was a very strange fault on the lens. I don't know for sure
if
it was a crack, a scratch (on an internal element?), or something else,
but
it proves the value of taking a flashlight when you inspect a lens. I
probably wouldn't have noticed it by the ambient light alone, but whatever
it was it stretched across most of the diameter of the element.
