When importing RAW files, the Brightness adjustment controls the relationship of the percentage of black point to white point values through the midrange point, or where the middle inflection point of the gamma curve is placed. If the number "50" bothers you, consider it as "0" and the range to be -50 to +50. Setting it to "0" on the current scale is ridiculous for RAW conversion. You'll be making very weird corrections to RAW files if that's the default setting.

When importing RGB files for the first time (JPEG, TIFF or PSD), the assumption is that the file is already rendered and brightness as a control function is set to "no change" or zero on the current scale. Most adjustments to brightness in these cases are to shift the already- rendered gamma curve in response to adjustments in black point and white point settings. Usually the adjustment goes

exposure (white point) ... pull down to protect highlights
blacks (black point) ... pull up to push down noise by raising the threshold
brightness ... add to bring up good shadow values

When I open imported K10D RAW files (converted from PEF to DNG on importation) in the Develop module, the Brightness is set by default to +50.

I'm a "start at zero" kinda guy, so this bugs me. I've changed the defaults so Brightness is at 0, but then of course I'm adjusting the exposure or brightness on almost every shot.

Does LR set the default Brightness at +50 for all cameras, or only for the K10D? Does it bug anyone else?

I wondered about this when I first configured LR on our computer at home, and it occurs to me again as I have been setting it up on this new MacBook Pro.
