Hi gang,

I'm testing some video on my website - if you'd like to try it on your
computer and connection, please feel free.

it's a 3 minute test and is currently too small, and judders a bit (have to republish with de-interlaced video and a bit bigger but it's getting
there) - I would be interested to see if both PC and Mac users can see
and hear it. If you can, please let me know your platform and browser,
and if you can't same thing. Thanks v much.

I tested it with both FireFox and Safari on Mac OS X v10.5.6, running on a Power Mac G5 with plenty of RAM and fast drives. I'm connected to the net via aDSL to an Airport Extreme base station. On streaming downloads, I normally see a continuous line up to 165Kbps network reads being performed with Activity Monitor.

- With both browsers, playback starts before sufficient data is downloaded to provide smooth play ... the playback catches up with the data transmission within about 8 to 10 seconds, then it stutters along stopping and starting as enough data comes in. I adjusted the Quicktime cache up to 1000Mbyte, no difference. I also tested whether the SafariBlock 'ad blocker' software was influencing the playback by disabling it and re-starting with a fresh connection ... no difference.

Activity Monitor is showing a jittery line from 5 to 45 Kbps reads.

I compared going to YouTube.com and playing a similar length video. In Activity Monitor, the download line does an early burst with up to max 165Kbps speed then settles into a continuous 85Kbps or so until all data is downloaded. The playback monitor bars show the download advancing ahead of playback by a factor of about 1.5:1 throughout the download, playback of video and sound is very smooth.

- Once downloaded into the local cache, your prototype plays smoothly all the way through on both browsers.

- Production-wise, it looks great. Good quality on both video and audio, levels not too high, etc etc. You do good work, eh? :-)
