John ============ Not much. It was an attempt to make HP drives proprietary and wide spread (for a long time they only wrote DVD+R). Now they do both. I think it was mainly HP that was the big pain. (They used to sell a lot of computers, probably still do.) Also for a long time DVD+R was more prone to errors also because it could only be used on some drives. Think Sony/Betamax, though the differences between +R and -R are smaller. Anyway, that is my understanding of it. I am sure someone else will pipe up with something more technical.
