I remember my first car (that I owned, as opposed to a parents' car
that I drove). About 1980 I bought a '72 Toyota Corolla for $200. It
needed a valve job and was already rusting to hell (no rust treatment
on Japanese cars in those days). I mechanic friend did the valve job
for $200 in his driveway. I riveted galvanized sheet metal to the
rusted out bodywork and spray-painted it with red primer (it sort of
matched the Volcano Red original paint)

The car had 40,000 miles when I bought it, and it finally died at
100,000 miles about 7 years later. I did all my own repairs and tune
ups, so for a total of $400 I got a car that drove me 60,000 miles.
Very slowly (its inline 4 cyl. 1200cc pushrod shook and rattled and
complained over 55 mph), but with good economy (50mpg on the highway -
I could fill up it's small tank in Montreal and drive to Kitchener
without filling up - that's over 400 miles).

That car got me through university and law school...

Memories...

Congrats to Erin on her first "owner"!

cheers,
frank
