CLearly I should have read all the posts about the book before writing
about the cover...
I had never seen Bong's shot before - certainly lovely! I'd have much
prefered it not to have been tampered with.
I'm not so crazy about the trickery of computer generated photo mosaics,
I confess...
totally my particular brand of mental unstability , I'm sure... my
brains try to see everything and my eyes can't do it.
oh well

Oh, my Gosh. That cover is stunning! Cheers, Christine
It is!
Mark, who's photo is that? Am I correct in thinking it's Bong's?
Yes, It's Bong's shot. His (unmanipulated) version is in the book.
One of the great portraits I've ever seen. And the way you worked all
the photos into it as a mosaic is amazing! Great work!
I used freeware mosaic-generating software to create the mosaic
itself. It's pretty much a point-and-click affair (well, a
"point-and-click-and-wait-30-minutes-on-a-fast-computer" affair).
Then some fairly minor Photoshop touch-up work.
It looks *much* better on the book cover than it does on the web! I
checked it out with a loupe to see the individual images :)
Later today I should have a copy of the Cafe Press poster and I'll let
everyone know how that looks.
