There's an old saying that goes something along the lines of "If it
has wings or ti..uh no Y chromosomes, it's cheaper to rent than to
own". 

It seems to me that the same could be said for lenses, studio lights,
film scanners, all the really cool, really expensive, toys that you'd
only use now and then.

Are there setups where everybody would pay $50-100 a month and to get
access to shared equipment? Maybe renting it for 2% of value per day
with half of that going back to whoever owns the lens.

I can see all sorts of benefits to belonging to such a club, and all
sorts of headaches to running it. 

I know that there are businesses that rent out gear, but they work a
lot better if you have a Canon or Nikon.
