Thank you.

It turns out that the shots that I posted from New York have gotten a
lot more favorable comments than most of the shots that I have done
recently. This is ironic since that trip was very soon after I got my
Pentax (I bought my third lens for the camera, including the kit lens
that came with it, on that trip). In the past year I have spent a lot
of time, taking pictures practically every day, any time I had a few
minutes, trying to improve my craft. It would be sad to think that my
skills are actually deteriorating.

I like to think that more of my photos are technically better than the
ones I took on that trip. I have a tremendous number of near misses
from that trip. Shots that would have been nice except for camera
blur, blown exposure, etc.

There is also the case that while I've only had my Pentax for 16
months, I started my photographic hobby (albeit with some long
hiatuses) 35 years ago. So I hope that by a year ago, I had some grasp
of composition, just lacked the skills to get the photo digitally.

And last, but not least, there is the excuse that on that trip I was
in New York City. Most of the 36,000 frames I've taken since then have
been pretty much literally whatever was close when I had a few minutes
to play. I consider one of the marks of a good photographer is to be
able to take beautiful pictures of things that aren't beautiful
(witness Godfrey's pictures of sticks and stones), it's a lot easier
to get pretty shots of pretty views.

In the meantime, I guess I'll try to keep sharpening my skills so that
when I do get a chance to shoot something pretty, I'll be able to make
the best use of the opportunity.
